Lovely photos. Did you know that a 17-year old Mary Wollstonecraft used to walk among the ruins of Laugharne Castle when her family lived in Laugharne in 1776? Does Laugharne have any mention of her residence there? According to her biographers, she also wandered the shore and would seclude herself in caves to read and write in solitude, away from her highly dysfunctional family.

I did not know that! My friend Susan is about to go up to Beverley in Yorkshire because they have recently worked out where in Beverley Mary W lived. She certainly got about!

She did, especially in childhood, thanks to her shiftless father. But I think it all prepared her for what was to come in her adult life. She became very resilient and was not afraid to go to places other women would have never thought to venture, especially alone.

Perfect. Laugharne Castle looks organic in that picture, the hut looks possibly even better than your shepherd’s gaff, and the poem, well, it’s in my top five.
